Everything you need to know about train CO2e emissions

It refers to the amounts of greenhouse gases emitted by the train due to its energy consumption. The GES footprint is a measurement of the quantity of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GGE), primarily Carbon Dioxide (CO2), as well as Methane (CH4) and Nitrous Oxides (N2O). The combination is expressed in CO2 equivalent (CO2e).

The main source of GGE is the combustion of fossil fuels by a direct or indirect activity, the manufacturing of a product, etc. The quantity of CO2e emitted during a train journey is calculated by multiplying the distance traveled by the average quantity of CO2e emitted per kilometer by a traveler, based on the type of train used:

The distance is obtained from the kilometric databases of the railway lines.

SNCF distinguishes 4 types of trains: TGV, Intercités, TER, and Transilien.

For each type of train, the average quantity of CO2e emitted per kilometer is calculated annually by dividing the energy consumption of the previous year (to which a CO2e emission factor per type of energy is applied) by the number of passengers transported in the previous year and the distance they covered.
