Best things to see and do in Brussels
Brussels is a historic city, known across Europe for its gorgeous architecture. Any walk around Brussels should start in the Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dominated by the spectacular medieval Town Hall. Wander through the historic guildhalls, soaking up the atmosphere, or spend a morning exploring the Maison du Roi, a neo-Gothic building in the Grand Place that is home to the city's museum.
From the Grand Place, it'll only take you five minutes to walk to the Manneken Pis, the iconic statue that has become a true symbol of Belgium. After snapping a few selfies, it's time to move on to more sights. Visit the museums of the Parc du Cinquantenaire. Among them is Autoworld, a true paradise for car lovers, where you can see a huge number of beautiful vintage vehicles. Travelling with the family? Pop into Mini-Europe and check out the small scale replicas of the continent's most famous landmarks, from the Eiffel Tower to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Annual events to enjoy in Brussels
You can catch the train from London to Brussels at any time of year, so why not time your visit to take in one of the city's biggest events? Here are some of the best:
- The Zinneke Parade takes place every two years, at the beginning of June. This colourful extravaganza showcases the diverse cultures and communities that make up Brussels, and it always has a wonderful atmosphere.
- Ommegang in July is one of the city's biggest events. It starts with a historical procession, with participants dressed up in 16th century clothes. This is followed by live performances and fireworks in the Grand Place. On the days around Ommegang, you'll find medieval markets and history-themed events in the city centre.
- Every two years, Flower Carpet transforms the Grand Place into a spectacle of stunning colours. This event in August makes the most of nature's bounty, as thousands of glorious flowers are used to decorate the square.
- Don't panic if you see Count Dracula wandering the streets in June! The highlight of the annual Brussels Film Festival is the Vampire Ball, one of the most dramatic costume parties in Europe.
- The Brussels Christmas Market is often considered to be one of the best in Europe. With over 2.5km of stalls to explore, it's packed with artisan gifts, handicrafts, festive decorations, and delicious food.
The best time of year to visit Brussels
Brussels has four distinct seasons, so you'll have quite a different experience depending on when you visit. Here's what you can expect at different times of year:
- Brussels in spring: Pack a raincoat as well as some sunscreen, as the Belgian spring is notoriously unpredictable. You may even see a bit of snow in March or April! If you can cope with the changing weather, then spring is a great time to visit. The city's cherry trees are in bloom, and colourful flowers can be seen almost everywhere you look.
- Brussels in summer: The days are long and warm, and it's the perfect time to enjoy a picnic in the Parc du Cinquantenaire. There are more events to enjoy, and there's a lively atmosphere on the terraces in the evening. Just be aware that this is the city's high season, so you can expect queues at the most popular attractions.
- Brussels in autumn: As the weather grows colder, the crowds start to vanish. This is the best time to visit Brussels if you're a foodie. Autumn is renowned as the peak season for Belgian mussels. Other delicious local ingredients, such as succulent roast pheasant, rich mushrooms, and wild boar, can only be found on the city's menus in autumn.
- Brussels in winter: The main attraction is the giant Christmas market, which gives the whole city a festive atmosphere. Just be sure to wrap up well, though – Brussels can be very cold in winter!
Things to eat and drink in Brussels
Brussels is a great destination for foodies. The city's most famous dish has to be moules-frites, a hearty plate of mussels and chips (whatever you do, don't call them French fries in front of a Belgian!). It's perfect for lunch or dinner, and pairs very well with a glass of local beer.
Of course, some of Brussels' most famous treats are perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth. Belgian chocolate is known around the world for its smooth, creamy texture and rich flavour, while the local waffles are a true delicacy. Brussels-style waffles tend to be light and crispy. The locals often eat them with just a dab of butter and a sprinkle of icing sugar, but you'll be able to find them with all kinds of tasty toppings. Thick, sweet Liège waffles made with caramelised sugar are also worth trying.
There are said to be 200 breweries in Belgium, and the locals take their beer very seriously. You'll find something to suit every taste. One of the benefits of travelling on the London to Brussels train is being able to bring back a bottle of something as a souvenir – no need to worry about restrictions on liquids.
