Enjoy a weekend exploring the city of London
To experience the rhythm of the English capital, start with the discovery of Trafalgar Square. With its famous Nelson Column, this square is undoubtedly one of the iconic places in London. Always very bustling, it adjoins the National Gallery. Enter this impressive museum for free, which houses the most famous paintings in the world, from artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet, as well as all the majors English painters, from Thomas Gainsborough to William Turner.
Then head towards 10 Downing Street to pass by the residence of the British Prime Minister. Next, head to the majestic and symbolic Big Benclock. At 100 meters high, it is visible from almost everywhere in London and is right next to one of the city's other iconic buildings, the Palace of Westminster, where the British Parliament sits. Nearby, Westminster Abbey will impress you with its proportions: this is where royal weddings are celebrated.
It's time for an outdoor break, and London has a lot to offer! Head to St. James's Park, right next to the abbey. Huge, this park offers beautiful walks along the lake shore. It's also the perfect place to see squirrels, who, accustomed to tourists and walkers, will approach you to ask for something to nibble on. Leave the park to go to Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British royal family. It has hundreds of rooms at certain times of the year, especially in the summer. Check the schedules to make sure you don't miss the Changing of the Guard, an event that takes place every day in the summer. Once your visit completed, Green Street offers you another green interlude as you make your way up to central London and reach Piccadilly Street. An iconic street in the capital, it is home to the famous Burlington Arcades as well as the department store Fortnum & Mason. And this major thoroughfare will naturally lead you to Piccadilly Circus. Always in motion, it is probably the nerve center of the capital. Often compared to New York's Times Square, it is close to many theaters. From Piccadilly Circus, you're just a few steps away from three of London's must-see places: Chinatown, the Chinese quarter, Leicester Square, a lively square, and finally Covent Garden. Stroll through this covered market to discover small shops and restaurants and enjoy various street performances.
If you can, organize a whole day dedicated to London's museums. Among them is the magnificent and immense British Museum. It has various departments with extremely rich collections, from Egyptian and Greco-Roman antiquities to collections from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. It is in this museum that you can observe the Rosetta Stone used by Champollion to decipher hieroglyphics. And if it's modern and contemporary art that interests you, head across the Thames, to the Tate Modern: spread over seven floors, you can easily devote half a day to it. For children, the Madame Tussaud wax museum offers an entertaining visit, while the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum located next door will offer you many opportunities to marvel.
And to discover all of London's monuments and the most iconic neighborhoods, opt for the double-decker bus. More original, why not opt for a beautiful cruise on the Thames? From your boat, you can notably observe the London Eye and the magnificent Tower Bridge. Book your train to London now to visit the capital of England!
