Day One: Experiencing the heart of Milan

Starting at Milano Porta Garibaldi station, take the Metro to Duomo station. Here in Piazza del Duomo, sitting right in the heart of Milan, lies the impressive Milan Cathedral. This magnificent baroque-style church took six centuries to complete and is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. Take some time to appreciate the various artworks and statues within the cathedral and see amazing city views from the rooftop terrace.

Once you've explored Milan Cathedral and its nearby museum, walk north across the Piazza del Duomo to find Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Opened in the late 19th century, the Galleria is the oldest shopping arcade in Italy, beautifully designed with its massive iron and glass dome and mosaic floors. Here you can explore numerous luxury stores as well as cafés, restaurants, art galleries, and even a hotel.

From the Galleria, head north across the Piazza della Scala to visit La Scala, one of Milan's grandest theatres. Built in the 18th century in the neoclassical style, the theatre is a great place to enjoy some fine culture. There is also a museum and guided tours of the theatre that are worth checking out.

To finish off the day, take the Metro down to Porta Genova station to visit I Navigli, Milan's scenic canal district. Take a stroll around the canals and explore the artisan shops and cafés, and maybe pick up a souvenir at one of the local markets. Explore the historic Vicolo dei Lavandai alley, take a boat ride down the canal, and enjoy a delicious aperitivo in one of the local bars.

Day Two: Delving Further Into Milan's History and Culture

Take the Metro to the Conciliazione station and just a short walk southeast will take you to the 15th-century monastery Santa Maria delle Grazie. This magnificent building houses artworks by well-known Italian artists, chief among them being "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci. However be aware that tickets to the museum are limited, so book well in advance.

Hop back on the Metro and head to Lanza station. Just a short walk east will take you to the colourful houses, shops and galleries of Brera, Milan's beautiful art district. While here, take some time to visit the Brera Botanical Garden and the Pinacoteca de Brera, which houses works by Raphael, Caravaggio and other Italian masters.

After lunch, head west a short distance from Brera to Sforza Castle. This impressive fortress has seen much of Milan's history over the centuries, and today houses various museums, archives and art galleries, including works by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Entrance to the castle is free, although you will need to purchase a ticket to enter the museums.

Right next door to the castle is Sempione Park. This is one of Milan's most popular urban parks and offers a great place to relax after a busy day. Take some time to explore the gardens and monuments in the park, including the magnificent Arco della Pace, a neoclassical stone arch built during the Napoleonic years.

Day Three: Hidden Gems of Milan

Take the Metro to Monumentale station and head to the Cimitero Monumentale di Milano, or Monumental Cemetery of Milan. This is one of the largest cemeteries in Milan, and is so-named because of the impressively designed tombs and mausolea within. Take a stroll through its pathways and admire the ornate statues and unique architectural designs in a peaceful atmosphere.

Milan is full of impressive museums, all of which offer something unique to explore and experience. The Leonardo da Vinci Museum of Science & Technology is housed in an ancient monastery and features full-scale, interactive models based on da Vinci's inventions and concepts. Others include the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, which houses the impressive Da Vinci Codex, the Villa Necchi Campiglio, and the Gallerie d'Italia.

Take some time to explore San Maurizio, with its many paintings and murals, earning it the nickname "The Sistine Chapel of Milan". The Basilica of Saint Ambrose is perhaps the oldest church in Milan, and offers an insight into Milan's ancient history. For something both atmospheric and fascinating, pay a visit to Chiesa di San Bernardino alle Ossa and its bone chapel, decorated with thousands of human bones and skulls over the centuries.

Head to Porta Nuova to explore the unique architecture of Milan's business district. Finish off the day with a visit to the Golden Quadrangle, a series of streets that house various trendy and luxury fashion labels such as Gucci and Chanel. Then head to Chinatown for a delicious fusion cuisine dinner.
