Visit Rotterdam in three days
Known for its contemporary architecture, dynamic culinary scene, and rich cultural attractions, Rotterdam is a dream destination for any city break or long weekend. It’s also incredibly accessible from the Dutch capital, with the train from Amsterdam to Rotterdam taking a mere 0h 41m minutes. With 10 Amsterdam to Rotterdam train services each day, it’s easy to book a departure time that suits your schedule.
First day: Uncover the city’s architectural marvels and savour local delicacies
After catching the train from Amsterdam to Rotterdam, one of the first things you’ll notice is the eclectic architecture that makes up the city’s skyline. Rotterdam lacks the leaning facades of Amsterdam’s canal houses, with much of its historic centre wiped out during the Second World War. Rather than rebuild, the Rotterdammers embraced reinvention, accounting for the inspiring mix of architectural styles that define the city today.
The Erasmus Bridge is one of Rotterdam’s crown jewels and a marvel of modern engineering. The brainchild of Ben van Berkel, work was completed in 1996, with the 800-metre-long bridge connecting the southern and northern portions of the city. Locals lovingly refer to it as “the Swan”, owing to its elegant lines, while its asymmetrical design makes it an iconic backdrop for any photo op.
Another architectural standout is the Kubuswoningen, or Cube Houses. Designed by Piet Blom, these cubic residential structures were unveiled in 1984 and serve as an emblem of Rotterdam’s reinventive spirit. Head to Overblaak Street near Blaak metro station to get an eyeful of these one-of-a-kind houses, or see what’s on the inside with a tour of a dedicated “show cube”. Two of the larger cubes even serve as a hostel, meaning you can enjoy an overnight stay in these angled beauties if you’re in town for a night or two.
If you’re a literature lover, you’ll also want to pencil in a visit to Book Mountain. Work on this unique public library was completed in 2012, with the pyramid-style structure home to a meandering spiral staircase providing ready access to a treasure trove of tomes. A thriving hub for education, Book Mountain is also a showcase of sustainability, with its green roof and power-saving systems integral to its design.
Feeling hungry after all that sightseeing? It’s time to get acquainted with Rotterdam’s deliciously diverse food scene. Whether you’re in the market for cheap eats or Michelin-starred menus, you’re spoiled for choice in the Netherlands’ second city. If you’re a fan of international cuisine, head to Markthal, a sprawling indoor market packed out with stalls serving up everything from French bistro favourites to Cantonese delicacies. If you’re after fierier flavours, Bazar’s the place to be with its endless mix of Middle Eastern eateries, including must-try Moroccan and Iranian menus.
If you’re craving local specialties, there’s plenty to get excited about in Rotterdam. If it’s only a quick bite you’re after, try Dutch fast food classics like frikandellen, bitterballen, and kroketten served up with a generous dollop of mustard. If you’re particularly hungry, an order of double-fried Belgian fries is definitely in order. Forgo the ketchup and reach for the mayo if you want to enjoy these like a local.
Enjoyed some late-night fun along Witte de Withstraat? Round off your evening with a Rotterdam takeout favourite like Kapsalon. Perfect for those with big appetites, this dish is built on a bed of French fries, topped with grilled meats and melted slices of fresh Gouda. If you’re looking for a veggie-friendly option, swap out the gryo for falafel and load up on side salad and garlic mayonnaise.
Second day: Discover Rotterdam’s historic harbor and cultural attractions
Rotterdam’s historic harbor, known locally as Oude Haven, is a popular spot for visitors. As the oldest harbour in the city, Oude Haven is rich in maritime history, with a large museum and many historical ships moored in the vicinity. Here, you’ll find an unusual mix of centuries-old buildings standing alongside more contemporary architecture, giving the area a character that’s unique from the rest of the city.
Once you’re done exploring the harbourside, take a load off and enjoy a well-earned break at one of the many cafes and restaurants in the area. With your batteries recharged, you’ll be ready to soak up some culture. Rotterdam is home to dozens of renowned museums and galleries, with the Museumpark region of the city a good place to start. This cultural hub is home to the Kunsthal Rotterdam, famed for its ever-changing art and photography exhibitions, not to mention the city’s very own Natural History Museum.
Final day: Explore local landmarks for unforgettable photo ops
Still got a long list of landmarks left to see during your stay in Rotterdam? It’s time to indulge in some last-minute sightseeing. Make Markthal your first stop, with this market hall instantly identifiable thanks to its distinctive horseshoe shape. If you’re still lingering by the harbor, make time for a snap in front of the historic Witte Huis, or brave the height of the Euromast to enjoy panoramic views of the local skyline and secure a breathtaking backdrop for your next photo.
Keen to pick up a few mementos of your stay in Rotterdam? There are plenty of premier retail spots worth seeking out. If you’re looking for familiar brands and high street chains, head to Lijnbaan & Koopgoot. This central shopping venue is home to a variety of popular chain stores. If you’re after more eclectic buys, think about spending an afternoon exploring Noordplein, Zwaanshals, and Zaagmolenkade. These shopping streets are lined with boutiques and exclusive vendors, stocking everything from one-of-a-kind fashions to vintage furniture.
