The Cannes Film Festival awards its famous Palme d'Or every year. But where does this symbol come from? It refers to the Abbey of Lérins, of which the palm is the emblem. The legend says that a monk, Saint Honorat, would have climbed to the top of a palm tree to ask God to rid the island of Lérins of the poisonous snakes which infested it then. The crossing to discover the island and its abbey leaves from the port of Cannes and lasts approximately 15 minutes.
