Explore the city of Zurich

Zurich is on the banks of Lake Zurich (Zurichsee), and is Switzerland's major international economic and financial hub. It's also a holiday destination thanks to River Limmat, Europe's cleanest urban river, where you can enjoy a swim in summer. The official language is German, but Zurich residents speak a slightly different Zurich dialect.

Was the Dada art movement born in Zurich?

The Dada movement was born in 1916 at the Voltaire cabaret club in Zurich. Cabaret Voltaire was a cultural hub that lasted six months, from February to July 1916, but then closed after locals complained about its 'nightly excesses'. But it wasn't long before Dadaism appeared, an intellectual, literary and artistic movement that challenged all ideological, aesthetic and political conventions and constraints. This 'Concrete art' movement emerged from Zurich's Kunstgewerbeschuhle school of decorative arts, now called the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. The Haus Konstruktiv foundation and museum in Zurich specialises in the Dada movement.

What are Zurich's must-sees?

Lake Zurich: romantic strolls along its banks and trips out on the water with a mini-cruise or a paddlewheel boat tour are must-do activities in Zurich! The historic medieval city of Zurich is home to stunning landmarks, including Grossmünster Cathedral, Zurich's pride and joy. You'll also find the largest sundial in Europe at St Peter's Church, and the Fraumünster, famous for stained-glass windows by Giacometti and Chagall.

What are Zurich's main museums?

The Swiss National Museum (Landesmuseum) has been presenting Swiss culture and history since 1898. The Rietberg Museum is a fine arts museum with an impressive collection of African, Islamic and Asian works. It is the largest museum of non-European art in Switzerland and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Kids will love the Zürcher Spielzeugmuseum with toys that go back 300 years. The Museum of Fine Arts (Kunsthaus Zurich) has a major collection of European works from the late Middle Ages to the present day, one of the largest in Switzerland. The Kunsthalle is the museum of contemporary art. The Pavillon Le Corbusier is home to the Heidi Weber Museum, a total work of art that retraces the architect's life and work Art foundations are important in Switzerland, and Zurich is home to the Emil G. Bührle Foundation and Collection and the Egon von Vietinghoff Foundation.

What are Zurich's must-see events?

The Sechseläuten at the end of April celebrates the end of winter: a snowman filled with explosives is burnt on a large pyre at Sechseläutenplatz culminating in a (literally) explosive finale! If it burns and explodes quickly, the summer will be hot, if it takes a long time, the summer will be cold.
The techno Street Parade, held on the 2nd Saturday in August, is the world's biggest techno rave and Zurich's largest annual event. Freestyle.ch is Europe's biggest freestyle event, featuring freeskiing, FMX bikes, snowboarding and skateboarding. The Zurick festival, Züri Fäscht, takes place every 3 years and lasts 3 days. The Live at Sunset music festival features concerts held over two weeks in July.
