Welcome to the tallest sand dune in Europe, located in Teste-de-Buch, close to the town of Arcachon and just 65 km from Bordeaux. Bordered by both forest and ocean, set off on the climb to the top of the Dune du Pilat and discover this natural gem that is the pride of Arcachon Bay.

      A listed site
A true symbol of our national heritage, the Dune du Pilat is a protected site.
Formed from the mixing of sand, wind and water, the Dune du Pilat is constantly moving, edging one to five metres closer to Teste-de-Buch forest every year. The wind and sea shift enough sand every year to push the dune back towards the forest, without taking away from its height.

      A climb worth the effort
From the foot of the dune, you will be amazed by its height. But rest assured, millions of visitors attempt the climb every year. So go for it and enjoy the view!
If you look to the right, you’ll see Arcachon Bay. Turn to the left and you’re presented with the impressive Teste-de-Buch forest. And don’t forget the view which awaits you upon descent, often accompanied by tumbling and fits of laughter.

      Astonishing views
Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be breathless. Don’t worry, it’s not because of the climb, but due to the wonderful scenery! The recommended time to go would have to be sunset, when the sun’s last rays of the day light up the whole of Arachon Bay.
As for the perfect time of year, June and September are best as visitor numbers are lower than in the height of summer.

      Endless beaches
Once you reach the bottom (by rolling, sliding or tumbling), you come to the beautiful beach. Here you can enjoy a swim in the morning, a family picnic in the afternoon or a drink with friends in the evening.
And did you know? Dune du Pilat’s beach was voted the second most beautiful beach in the world by The Guardian magazine!

Arcachon Bay opens itself up to you
Although the view of Arcachon Bay is spectacular from the top of the dune, it’s even better in person. From Bird Island (l’île aux oiseaux) to Banc d’Arguin by way of the beach and the centre of Arcachon by tourist train, there’s so much to see.
Treat yourself to a tour of the bay on a catamaran for a drinks excursion. Relish the view while tasting the regional culinary specialities.
