When should I take out insurance?

You can take out Allianz Travel insurance while you're buying your train ticket, just after you've selected it. We'll propose insurance that's fully adapted to your trip and to the exchange and cancellation conditions of your train ticket.
 

Is this travel insurance contract right for me?

This travel insurance contract is designed for individuals booking one or more train ticket on the SNCF Connect website to travel to Switzerland or to a European destination serviced by SNCF Connect and wish to protect themselves against certain unforeseen events beyond their control, occurring before or during their journey (cover differs depending on the type of train ticket).
To be eligible for cover you must be a Swiss resident of and your trip must not exceed a maximum of 30 consecutive days.

This insurance contract is not suitable if : 

  • you are looking for cancellation insurance to cover you against the risks associated with pre-existing health problems,
  • your trip lasts more than 30 consecutive days
  • your trip has already begun 
  • you are already covered by another insurance policy offering the same benefits 

Travel insurance covers all eligible passengers on the same reservation.

  • Allianz Travel travel insurance is offered as an option when you book your train ticket on the SNCF Connect website. When confiming your ticket purchase, you will be able to select whether or not you would like travel insurance before proceeding to payment.

    To take out this insurance policy your main residence must be located in Switzerland.

  • Travel insurance is a temporary contract that ends automatically at the end of your trip - you do not need to cancel the policy. If however,  you are not satisfied with the cover you have taken out, you can choose to cancel within 14 days of taking out the policy, as long as you have not started your trip and no claim has been or will be made. To do so, simply log www.sncf-connect.allianz-protection.com in the "Manage my policy" section.
     

  • If I change my mind about travelling, can I get my ticket refunded by Allianz travel insurance?

     Travel insurance will not cover you if you decide to cancel your trip because you changed your mind, there is a change in personal circumstances or if the purpose of your trip is cancelled (e.g. cancellation of a concert or birthday party) 
    However you can be covered for cancellation or amendment of your ticket following to an unforeseen event that is beyond your control and included in the list of covered reasons in your policy for example:  

    • you catch the flu and are confined to bed,
    • you have a bad fall down the stairs and have to stay at home,  
    • your employer cancels your leave  and you can't travel, 
    • you get a new job and have to start earlier than planned,
    • the person you were supposed to travel with is hospitalised,
    • the public transport you are taking to get to the station breaks down and you miss your train,
    • you and your partner who you were due to travel with separate before the trip,

    The local weather conditions are bad. Can I cancel my ticket and be reimbursed by Allianz Travel insurance? 

    Travel insurance won't cover you if you decide to cancel your trip because it's raining at your destination.
    On the other hand, it does provide cover for extreme weather conditions, involving a large-scale event that could cause damage, disrupt transport and represent a danger.

    Here are a few examples: 

    The insurance will cover you if: 

    • You were due to go away for the weekend, and heavy thunderstorms caused flooding, bringing the town and transport system to a standstill,
    • You were due to stay at a campsite, but wild fires lead the authorities to evacuate the area.

     

    My train is cancelled. Am I covered by insurance?

    No. Travel insurance will not cover you if the train is cancelled by the carrier, even in the event of a strike. Only claims for ticket cancellations made by you, for a covered reason, will be considered under the insurance. 
    To obtain reimbursement for a cancelled train ticket, please contact SNCF Connect directly to find out about their conditions for reimbursement.

     

    I have to cancel a train ticket that that provides cancellation cover for certain reasons. Will the insurance reimburse me for the cancellation fees charged by SNCF Connect?

    Yes, providing the reason for cancellation is covered by the insurance contract you have taken out. To claim reimbursement, you must first cancel your ticket on www.sncf-connect.com/en-ch which will confirm the cancellation fee applicable. You can then request a refund of this cancellation fee directly on https://sncf-connect.allianz-protection.com

     

    What evidence do I need to provide the insurer with for a claim for cancellation or amendment of my trip ?


    For all refund requests, you must provide the original booking invoice for your trip as well as your tickets showing your name and the dates and times of travel.

    In the event of cancellation or amendment of your trip, you must also provide the cancellation invoice or details of the amendment fee. 
    If your request relates to illness or injury, a medical certificate completed by the attending doctor must also be provided.

    How much will I be reimbursed?

    If you cancel your ticket for a covered reason, the insurance reimburses any cancellation fees charged by SNCF Connect :

    Example: 
    I break my ankle the day before my departure, I cancel my flexible train ticket, leaving the next morning because I'm immobilised at home and can't travel. This is a reason for cancellation provided for in the insurance contract. 
    - Cost of my round trip: €149. 
    - Reimbursement by SNCF Connect: €130 
    - Cancellation fees charged by SNCF Connect: €19 
    - Reimbursement by Allianz Travel insurance: €19

     

    How long will it take to be reimbursed?

    You will receive a refund of the cost of cancelling or amending your train ticket within 5 days of the insurer receiving all the required claim details 
     

  • I missed my train because the local public transport was at a standstill this morning. Am I covered by insurance?

    Yes, if you miss your train due to a breakdown, accident or strike of the means of transport used to get you to the station, the insurance provides cover for a new train ticket to be purchased to get you to your planned destination


    I missed my train because I overslept. Am I covered by insurance?

    No. The insurance does not cover you if you miss your train due to a reason that was within your control.

  • My train is delayed by more than 30 minutes. Am I entitled to compensation?

    If you are delayed in arrival by more than 30 minutes, you benefit from the G30 guarantee (30-minute guarantee) offered by SNCF which covers certain circumstances. 
    In addition, travel insurance covers your journey from the arrival station on to your destination, up to the amount shown in the table of cover.

  • How do I claim a refund?

    To make your claim, log on https://sncf-connect.allianz-protection.com using your policy number (starting with VSCCH) then go to "File/complete your claim"

    How soon will I receive my refund?

    In the event of cancellation or amendment of your ticket, you should receive your refund within 5 days (of the insurer receiving all the required claim details) directly into the bank account using the details you have provided us.

    To track your claim, log on https://sncf-connect.allianz-protection.com using your policy number (starting with VSCCH) then go to "Track your claim"

    Where can I find my policy number?

    You can find your travel insurance policy number on the Allianz Travel confirmation e-mail sent to you after you have purchased your ticket. It starts with VSCCH followed by a series of numbers
