Paris, the monuments you must see

Take the train from Geneva to discover the capital's must-see monuments. The Geneva-Paris train will take you to Paris Gare de Lyon in just over three hours. A tourist's paradise, with examples of spectacular architecture everywhere; sometimes, you only have to look up. It isn't easy to choose between them because there are so many...

What to see once you arrive at the Gare de Lyon

Start your visit by admiring the Gare de Lyon from the outside. Dating from 1900, its clock is famous and was built for the World Fair.
We can't avoid mentioning the Arc de Triomphe, so often pictured on postcards and easily accessible by Metro or RER from Paris Lyon! This imposing structure overlooks the Place Charles de Gaulle and is a tribute to French soldiers. From there, the Champs-Élysées is just a stone's throw away, as is the Grand Palais, a splendid example of Belle Epoque architecture hosting many exhibitions each year. A little further on, you can admire the Alexander III Bridge, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful bridges in the capital, which was built to celebrate Franco-Russian friendship. You can return that way to the Esplanade des Invalides.

Visit the most important monuments in Paris

Another must-see site is, of course, Notre Dame! This Gothic-style cathedral is located in the heart of Paris. It gained international fame with the publication of Victor Hugo's Notre Dame, of which the cathedral is the real heroine. If you love medieval art, stop by the Sainte Chapelle and the Palais de Justice, formerly the residence of the kings of France, then the prison and finally, the Palais de Justice. They are barely a ten-minute walk away and are representative of French history and cultural heritage.
If you are interested in neoclassical architecture, the Pantheon, the necropolis of distinguished French citizens, is the perfect illustration. Its domed roof is instantly recognisable to all Parisians, as are its Corinthian columns, which are strongly inspired by Greek temples. Step inside to see the replica of the famous pendulum designed by Léon Foucault to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth. In the same vein, but without a dome, the Madeleine church, which dominates the Rue Royale, is also not to be missed!

What should we see in Paris to create unforgettable memories?

On a different note, the spectacular Pyramid of the Louvre offers a surprising combination of modernity against a French renaissance backdrop. It stands, all glass and sparkling transparency, 21.6 metres high in the middle of the Napoleon courtyard and is the gateway to one of the most beautiful museums in the world. Don't miss the courtyard and the pyramid at night; the lighting makes the whole thing particularly stunning and majestic.
Enjoy a magnificent view of Paris by going to the Basilique du Sacré Coeur. It overlooks Montmartre with its cobblestone streets and offers a striking contrast with the surrounding neighbourhood. Its white facade and Byzantine-inspired lines make it one of the most impressive monuments in Paris, truly unique.
You will still have the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, the Palais du Luxembourg, the Place de la Bastille and its Opera House and many other things to see, but Paris is worth several visits. And since we have to start somewhere, book your Geneva-Paris train ticket now!
