The best beaches on Ile de Ré

The island of Ile de Ré off La Rochelle has wonderful beaches. How do you choose between them? We bring you our pick of the island’s not-to-be-missed beaches, whether you’re visiting as a family, as a couple or with friends. 

Book a train ticket

You can get to Ile de Ré by train via la Rochelle or by bus. The best beaches on Ile de Ré are located at the south of the island and on its western tip. It’s the perfect destination if you enjoy laying down your towel on large sandy beaches!

La plage de la Trousse-Chemise

La plage de la Trousse-chemise is located in the town of Portes-en-Ré, on the western tip of the island. Aznavour sang of its beauty: "We went swimming at Trousse chemise..."

Make the most of this large beach on the edge of a forest to enjoy quality time with the family. A picnic under the pine trees is in order, followed by a good swimming and sunbathing session. You can also explore fantastic stretches of sea bed on the large sandbank named banc du bûcheron.

La plage des Gremettes

For the most sporty types and thrill-seekers, la plage des Gremettes in Sainte-Marie-de-Ré is perfect! Nice waves await. It’s the perfect place to enjoy quality time with friends.

La plage de la Conche

Head to the largest beach on Ile de Ré: plage de la Conche. This 3 km stretch of sand facing the ocean is perfect for a stroll in the sun. It stretches from the Baleines au Petit Bec lighthouse. 

Its stand-out features are its limpid waters, waves, dunes and forest that you can access thanks to a cycle path.

La plage des Gros Joncs

La plage des Gros Joncs is a safe, family-friendly beach, with a sailing club where you can enjoy windsurfing, surfing, kayaking and catamaran, and get the chance to try out stand-up paddling. There's a kids’ club nearby.

Before you leave, take a shopping tour to seek out local specialities to bring back as souvenirs!
