The top activities to enjoy in Munich with friends:
Soak up the flavours and atmosphere of Oktoberfest
It would be a shame to miss out on Germany’s biggest beer festival, which takes place every year in Munich. From mid-September to mid-October, six million people gather on “Theresienwiese” (the open area where Oktoberfest takes place) and guzzle no less than seven million litres of beer.
It’s a great way to enjoy an incredible atmosphere with friends for a weekend, and definitely something you should do at least once. And to fully assimilate the local culture, wear a “tracht”, the traditional Bavarian clothing.
Enjoy an aperitif in a Biergarten
By “Biergarten”, we mean a typical open-air beer garden where you can eat and drink typical dishes at large wooden tables. The Biergarten is one of Germany’s favourite pastimes, and it’s easy to see why.
Every year, the return of spring marks the start of the outdoor beer season. With its bucolic setting and guaranteed atmosphere, Munich has 200 Biergartens to choose from.
Dine in Munich’s oldest tavern
A classic among classics for full immersion in Bavarian culture, the “Hofbräuhaus Am Platz” is a must-visit in Munich. People come here to eat typical dishes at any time of the day. It’s a gigantic beer hall (one of the largest in Germany) where the ale flows freely.
Take a seat in one of the huge rooms and enjoy the unique decor in a folkloric atmosphere.
Climb the roof of the Olympic stadium
For sports enthusiasts and architecture buffs alike, this is an original activity. Visit the huge Olympic Park, built for the 1972 Games and since converted into a green space. Climb the 52 metres to the glass and metal roof of the impressive building.
Exceptional views and thrills are guaranteed. There are three options for getting back down: walking, a gigantic zip line or abseiling! Allow 2 hours for the excursion.
Watch the surfers on the Eisbach Canal
Larger than Central Park, Englisher Garten is one of the largest urban parks in the world. It’s not unusual to bump into cross-country skiers in winter, and horse riders and nudists in summer... and surfers all year round! Yes, you read that right! Head to the south of the garden near the Haus der Kunst museum.
This is where you’ll find the unusual Eisbach wave known as the “Eisbachwelle”. It’s the most famous urban surfing wave in the world! Surfers and kayakers throw themselves in wholeheartedly, much to the delight of tourists. It’s a truly unusual show!
Enjoy Munich’s nightlife
Munich is a lively city where the party is always in full swing. There’s a host of trendy bars, pubs and clubs to suit all tastes. Night owls will enjoy a stroll through the Kultfabrik district.
Those looking to party will want to head to the Neuraum, a gigantic club that plays sophisticated techno. Located in a sort of air-raid shelter, it can accommodate over 2,000 people on several floors, all in an ultra-minimalist setting.
